Hyundai Steel orders finishing lines for Louisiana mill

Hyundai Steel and France-based Fives Group have signed a major contract to design and supply advanced coil finishing lines for automotive steel applications.

The agreement supports Hyundai-Posco Louisiana Steel’s new flat steel mill in the United States, with a total capacity of 2.7 mln tons per annum. The USD 5.82 bln project marks a significant step in industrial cooperation between South Korea, France and the US.

The facility will produce annually 650,000 tons of HRC and 2.05 mln tons of CRC, using a direct reduction plant-electric arc furnace (EAF) route to deliver high-quality, low-carbon steel. Around 70pct of output, approximately 1.8 mln tons per year, will be dedicated to automotive applications.

Positioned as the world’s first fully EAF-based integrated steel mill focused on automotive steel, the plant is expected to cut CO2 emissions by around 70pct compared with conventional blast furnace production.
