South Korea’s Hyundai Steel has signed an agreement with global classification and certification body DNV to develop technologies and an international certification system for steel used in the transportation and storage of future energy sources such as ammonia and hydrogen.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop performance evaluation and verification technologies for steel and welded joints used in ships, offshore facilities and energy storage applications. They will also establish testing and evaluation methods reflecting actual operating and storage conditions and work to expand certification infrastructure aligned with international standards.
Hyundai Steel will contribute its material development, research and testing capabilities, while DNV will provide expertise in inspection, certification and international standards for ships and offshore facilities.
The companies plan to use the results of their joint research to support technology standardization and expand the international certification framework. Hyundai Steel said the cooperation will strengthen its capabilities in developing steel for emerging energy applications, from product development and performance evaluation to certification.
Hyundai Steel, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, is one of South Korea’s largest steel producers, manufacturing a wide range of flat and long steel products for the automotive, construction, shipbuilding and machinery sectors.
