The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) has urged the Ministry of Steel to introduce a dedicated policy for the stainless steel industry.
“We have requested an exclusive stainless steel policy because we are often grouped with carbon steel,” ISSDA President Rajamani Krishnamurti said.
The proposed policy would focus on raw material securitization, boosting demand, and expanding production capacities. Discussions with the Ministry of Steel are ongoing.
Krishnamurti highlighted the industry’s installed capacity of 7.5 mln tons, with a utilization rate exceeding 60pct. “There is significant potential to scale up production,” he noted.
However, 30pct of domestic demand is currently met through imports, primarily from China and Vietnam, underscoring the need for targeted policy support.
