Jindal Steel commissions hot strip mill at Angul plant

SMS group has supplied a high-capacity hot strip mill (HSM) to Jindal Steel’s Angul site in Odisha, India. Designed for an annual capacity of five mln tons, the 1,780 mm mill features advanced rolling technologies for efficient and sustainable production, particularly of thin-gauge strips.

This marks the first HSM at Jindal Steel’s Angul site and strengthens its long-standing partnership with SMS group. Given their history of collaboration, Jindal Steel entrusted SMS group to deliver cutting-edge technology for the project.

The mill is equipped with state-of-the-art components, including a primary descaler, two roughing stands with edgers, a coilbox without a mandrel, edge heaters, a seven-stand finishing mill, laminar cooling, and three downcoilers. Additional features include AMOVA coil handling, strapping and marking machines, and an inspection line.

Designed to process a wide range of steel grades, including high-strength low-alloy (HSLA), pipe grades, and silicon steels, the mill can reliably roll very thin strips. Over 20pct of the materials are high-strength grades, handled with precision by advanced rolling technology.

The seven-stand finishing mill, in a 4-hi design, includes hydraulic adjustments, hydraulic loopers, and the latest CVC plus (Continuously Variable Crown) system for work roll shifting and bending. SMS group also supplied the X-Pact Profile, Contour, and Flatness Control (PCFC) system, which optimizes rolling parameters to ensure process stability, high strip quality, and a flexible rolling schedule.
