Indian steelmaker Jindal Steel has received Guinness World Records recognition for constructing the world’s longest road using processed steel slag aggregates at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh.
The 1.85-km four-lane road was built using around 200,000 tons of processed steel slag, replacing natural aggregates and reducing dependence on quarrying. The project was developed by Jindal Steel in collaboration with CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI).
According to the company, scientifically processed steel slag can make roads around 30-40pct more cost-effective than conventional construction materials and extend road life by up to three times.
The project highlights the potential for greater utilization of steel slag as a construction material and supports India’s efforts to promote circular-economy applications for steel industry by-products.
Steel slag generation in India is expected to reach around 60 mln tons annually in the coming years as domestic steelmaking capacity expands, with the government promoting slag-based road construction technology.
