Jindal Steel Oman partners with Oman Cement to recycle steel slag

Jindal Steel Oman and Oman Cement Company have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support the use of approximately 1 mln tons of steel slag in clinker manufacturing.

The agreement aims to reduce reliance on virgin raw materials by incorporating steel slag into clinker manufacturing, supporting the productive use of steelmaking by-products and promoting circular economy practices in Oman. The slag will be used during clinker production rather than as a supplementary cementitious material in finished cement.

Jindal Steel Oman, part of India’s Jindal Group, is one of the GCC’s largest integrated steel producers. The group operates Jindal Steel Sohar, which has annual production capacity of 2.0 mln tons of gas-based DRI, 2.4 mln tons of crude steel through EAF and ladle furnace facilities, and 1.4 mln tons of rebar.

The company’s long steel business expanded in 2023 through the acquisition of Sohar Steel, adding 700,000 tons per year of long products capacity. More recently, it acquired Moon Iron and Steel Company (MISCO), increasing its annual rebar production capacity by a further 1.1 mln tons.
