JSW Salem, part of the JSW Steel Group, has successfully commissioned its modernized three-strand billet caster at its Salem works in India.
The brownfield upgrade, executed by Danieli, replaces the original caster installed in 1989 and is aimed at improving casting performance, reliability and billet quality. The scope included advanced technologies such as a Hy-Power hydraulic oscillator and electromagnetic stirrers at the mould and final stages. The caster features a 9-metre radius with a ladle sequence car configuration.
The project was completed within a contractual 45-day shutdown and commissioned ahead of schedule in 43 days, supported by coordinated planning between Danieli and JSW Salem.
JSW Salem operates a special alloy steel facility in Tamil Nadu with a crude steel capacity of 1 mln tons per year, supplying wire rod, special alloy bars and bright bars for automotive and engineering applications. The JSW Steel group’s consolidated crude steel capacity stands at 35.7 mln tons per year, with expansion plans to reach 43.4 mln tons within three years.
