JSW Steel to add galvanized steel capacity at Karnataka plant

India’s JSW Steel has selected Austria-based Andritz to supply a continuous galvanizing line at its Toranagallu steel plant in Karnataka, strengthening its capacity to produce value-added galvanized steel for automotive applications.

The line will have annual production capacity of around 500,000 tons and will process steel strip up to 1,900 mm wide and 2.60 mm thick. It will produce advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades with tensile strengths of up to 1,480 MPa.

The line is designed for speeds of up to 180 m/min and is scheduled to start up in 2028. It will include chemical cleaning, furnace, coating, cooling, skin pass, tension leveling and post-treatment sections.

The investment will enable JSW Steel to expand its portfolio of galvanized and AHSS products for automotive applications, where demand for lighter and stronger steel is increasing alongside the growth of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles.

JSW Steel’s consolidated crude steel capacity stands at 35.9 mln tons per year, including 1.5 mln tons in the US. The company plans to increase its domestic capacity to 50 mln tons per year and total consolidated capacity to 51.5 mln tons per year by FY2030-31.
