Kardemir ramps up output with new continuous casting machine

Turkey’s Kardemir has commissioned a new continuous casting machine (SDM-2) as part of its ongoing investment programme aimed at increasing high value-added steel production and reaching 3 mln tons per annum of liquid steel capacity.

The unit was officially put into operation on 3 April 2026, coinciding with the company’s 89th anniversary. The investment follows earlier upgrades, including a second vacuum plant and a sizing block at the bar and wire rod mill.

The new casting machine is expected to enhance both production capacity and product quality, supporting Kardemir’s strategy to expand its portfolio of high value-added steel products.

Kardemir said the project was completed within 16 months at an operating facility, highlighting efficient execution. The investment, valued at around USD 75 mln, marks another step in strengthening the company’s position in Turkey’s steel sector.

Founded in 1937, Kardemir is a major Turkish steel producer. The company produces blooms, billets, rebars, wire rods, profiles along with other steel products. The company’s production facilities are located in Karabuk.
