An explosion at a Grupo Simec steel plant in central Mexico has resulted in at least 12 fatalities and one injury, according to authorities in Tlaxcala. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when steel being poured came into contact with water, igniting a fire that has since been brought under control.
In a statement, Grupo Simec confirmed a liquid steel spill at the plant, which led to the tragic loss of life and the shutdown of operations. The company expressed deep regret over the incident and is currently investigating the cause.
Grupo Simec, based in Guadalajara, operates steel facilities in Mexico, the U.S., and Brazil.
