LKAB’s board has approved a SEK 6 bln (USD 646 mln) investment to build a new sorting plant at the Malmberget mine in Gallivare, strengthening production capacity and reducing environmental impact. Construction will begin in 2025, with operations expected to start in 2028.
The new 24,000 m2 facility will be built adjacent to the existing plant, which would have required extensive renovations without boosting capacity. The plant will play a key role in separating ore from waste rock, a crucial step in producing fines and pellet products.
LKAB, founded in 1890, is Sweden’s state-owned mining company and Europe’s largest iron ore producer, with core operations in underground mines in northern Sweden.
