Meranti Green Steel selects technology partners for Duqm DRI project

Meranti Green Steel (MGS) has appointed SMS group and Midrex Technologies as technology partners for the front-end engineering phase of its planned 2.5 mln tons per annum direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Duqm, Oman.

The project will utilize MIDREX Flex technology, which is designed to operate on a combination of natural gas and green hydrogen, allowing the plant to gradually increase green hydrogen usage as supply becomes available. The company said the technology will support its long-term strategy to produce low-carbon iron.

The engineering work will establish the technical foundation for the next stage of engineering and equipment supply and represents another key milestone toward the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID).

Last month, Meranti Green Steel appointed Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the project delivery partner for the FEED phase. L&T is responsible for detailed engineering, plant layout, cost estimates and project scheduling ahead of construction.

Meranti Green Steel is developing a 2.5 mln tons per year DRI/hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), with commissioning targeted for mid-2029. The company has also outlined plans for a second HBI module that would double total production capacity to 5 mln tons per year.
