Ministry moves to standardize rebar testing amid growing demand

Myanmar’s Ministry of Industry plans to establish a certified laboratory for conformity testing of both imported and locally produced rebar, as part of broader efforts to ensure steel quality and support sector growth, according to local media reports.

The lab will standardize rebar testing in line with national construction standards, aiming to improve product quality and boost competitiveness amid rising steel demand.

To support the initiative, the Ministry is working with the Myanmar Iron and Steel Association to draft a national iron and steel policy roadmap. Efforts are also underway to develop three unified testing methods for steel materials, covering both domestic producers and importers.

Myanmar’s annual steel demand is estimated at one mln tons, with imports accounting for approximately 800,000 tons due to limited domestic production capacity of 200,000 tons.
