Oman will establish the region’s first integrated green ship recycling facility in Khatmat Malaha, North Batinah, aligning with its 2050 net-zero strategy. The project, developed by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) in partnership with Green Wheel Recycling Middle East, is set to begin construction this month following a concession agreement, according to the local media reports.
Designed to dismantle and recycle over 70 ships annually, the facility will generate around 2 mln tons of low-carbon steel in its initial phase. It will also support global shipping companies adapting to stricter environmental regulations, including the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention.
Beyond advancing sustainable maritime practices, the initiative is expected to create around 2,000 jobs, boost eco-friendly industries such as container manufacturing, and strengthen Oman’s non-oil GDP. MTCIT also emphasized plans for the sultanate to become the first Gulf nation to supply ships with electricity and green fuels while docked.
