Indian steel producer Mukand Ltd has completed the modernization of its two-strand bloom caster at its Kalwa plant in Thane, Maharashtra, following the successful completion of an upgrade project executed by SMS group.
The project involved the revamp of one of the plant’s first-generation casters to support the production of stainless steel rebar and wire rod grades, including the introduction of a new 250×300 mm bloom section for the bar mill.
Originally commissioned in 1984, the caster was upgraded to improve product quality, operational reliability, and production flexibility.
The modernization included installation of a new air-mist cooling system and straightening unit equipped with AC drive technology.
According to SMS group, the new bloom section will enable Mukand to expand its product portfolio and enter new market segments, while the upgrade is also expected to improve throughput and reduce maintenance-related downtime.
Mukand is one of India’s major specialty steel producers, manufacturing stainless steel and alloy steel products for automotive, engineering, and industrial applications.
