Nemo Industries has selected Tenova’s ENERGIRON technology for a new direct reduction plant in Louisiana, US, as part of its planned Ironworks I pig iron production project.
The plant will have annual production capacity of 2.5 mln tons of hot and cold DRI and will use the ENERGIRON Zero Reformer technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli. The DRI facility will produce high-carbon DRI as feedstock for Nemo Industries’ downstream pig iron production.
Tenova will begin front-end engineering design (FEED) work as the project progresses toward a final investment decision expected in December 2027.
The facility will also incorporate the HYTEMP hot DRI transport system and will be designed to allow future integration of carbon capture solutions. It will also be capable of incorporating hydrogen into the reduction process as hydrogen infrastructure develops along the US Gulf Coast.
Nemo Industries said the project is aimed at developing a domestic, cost-competitive and lower-emission pig iron supply chain, reducing reliance on imported steelmaking raw materials and supplying customers in the US and international markets.
