NMDC awards iron ore handling project to Rail Vikas Nigam

India’s state-owned iron ore producer NMDC Limited has awarded a contract worth INR 29.77 bln (USD 314 mln), including GST, to railway infrastructure company Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the development of buffer stockpiles and a blending yard at Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh.

The project involves the establishment of a facility with an iron ore handling capacity of 10 mln tons per year to support NMDC’s logistics and material management operations.

The buffer stockpile and blending yard will serve as a key logistics hub, enabling the storage, blending and dispatch of iron ore. Buffer stockpiles help maintain a stable flow of material by balancing fluctuations in production and shipments, while blending yards allow ore from different sources to be mixed to achieve consistent quality and meet customer specifications.

According to RVNL, the contract is scheduled to be completed within 42 months.

NMDC is India’s largest iron ore producer, operating major mining complexes in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. The company produced 53.16 mln tons of iron ore in FY2026 and targets annual production capacity of 100 mln tons by FY2031.
