India’s largest iron ore producer, NMDC, reported a 19.9pct YoY increase in iron ore production to 5.31 mln tons in May, according to provisional company data.
However, sales declined by 6.9pct YoY to 4.04 mln tons, compared with 4.34 mln tons in the same month last year.
In Chhattisgarh, production increased to 3.99 mln tons from 3.06 mln tons a year earlier, while sales rose to 3.34 mln tons from 3.0 mln tons.
In Karnataka, production edged down to 1.32 mln tons from 1.37 mln tons in May 2025. Sales in the state fell sharply to 0.70 mln tons from 1.34 mln tons.
During the first two months of the current fiscal year (April-May), NMDC’s iron ore production increased to 9.96 mln tons from 8.43 mln tons in the corresponding period last year. Sales, however, declined slightly to 7.72 mln tons from 7.94 mln tons.
NMDC is a major iron ore producer in India, operating the Bailadila mines, known for high-grade ore with up to 65.5pct Fe content. The miner aims to expand its iron ore capacity to 100 mln tons per annum by FY31.
