Oman Zinc has started construction of a USD 50 mln zinc recycling industrial park at Sohar Freezone, expanding Oman’s downstream metals processing capacity and zinc value chain.
The project, to be developed on a 100,000-square-metre site in two phases, will establish an integrated facility for zinc-bearing material recovery, refining, SHG zinc ingot production and zinc oxide manufacturing.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce around 100,000 tons of refined zinc ingots and 50,000 tons of zinc oxide annually, supplying customers across the GCC, India, Pakistan and other international markets.
The first phase will focus on processing zinc-bearing materials and pilot-scale SHG zinc ingot production, while the second phase will add a full-scale refinery and zinc oxide production plant.
According to Sohar Port and Freezone, the project will strengthen Oman’s metals sector by supporting downstream industries including galvanizing, alloy production, batteries and specialty chemicals. The facility will also promote circular manufacturing by recovering zinc-bearing industrial residues and converting them into value-added products.
