SMS group has successfully commissioned a fully integrated and automated forging line at Perryman Company’s site in Pennsylvania, USA. The new line includes a high-speed 40/45 MN open-die forging press and an SMX 500/15 MN hydraulic radial forging machine with two manipulators, both supplied entirely by SMS.
Designed specifically for titanium processing, the line enables Perryman to produce bars of various shapes and sizes, including lengths up to 14 meters. It also expands the company’s in-house product range to include thick bars and plates, which were previously outsourced, supporting increased demand from aerospace and medical sectors.
The forging machines are supported by a comprehensive process and production control system, featuring SMS’s MIDIS, ForgeBase, and Comforge technologies. These tools allow real-time optimization, smart production planning, and precise control over material properties and process parameters.
Additional systems such as SMS-Metrics, Smart Alarm, and Maintenance Advisor ensure early fault detection, preventive maintenance, and high machine availability. The automation allows Perryman to shift from external sourcing to efficient in-house production with a lean, trained workforce, meeting the strict quality standards of safety-critical industries.
