Iraqi officials have confirmed that PowerChina has secured a USD 4 bln contract to develop the country’s first large-scale seawater desalination plant in Basra, located in southern Iraq.
Launched by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the project will have a daily capacity of one mln cubic meters and is scheduled to begin commercial operations in June 2028.
The development also includes the construction of a 300-megawatt power plant to supply electricity to the facility.
Earlier in July, the Iraqi government announced plans to build four additional desalination plants in Basra as part of a broader strategy to expand non-conventional water resources.
