Primetals develops new EAF solution targeting lower CAPEX

Primetals Technologies announced the launch of its new EAF Ultimate Move electric arc furnace solution, aimed at supporting cost-efficient electric steelmaking projects during the steel industry’s transition phase.

The company stated that the new furnace design focuses on reducing capital expenditure (CAPEX) while maintaining productivity and operational flexibility. The EAF Ultimate Move is intended to deliver shorter tap-to-tap times, a smaller layout footprint, and lower maintenance requirements.

According to Primetals Technologies, the new solution expands its electric steelmaking portfolio alongside the EAF Quantum and EAF Ultimate furnace concepts. The EAF Ultimate Move can process a wide range of raw materials, including scrap, hot-briquetted iron (HBI), and blast furnace hot metal in different combinations.

The technology incorporates several features adopted from the EAF Quantum concept, including the exchange of the furnace shell toward the teeming bay, aimed at reducing plant footprint and lowering auxiliary equipment and infrastructure requirements.

Additional features include single-bucket operation, single-point roof swiveling, and the Furnace Advanced Slag-Free Tapping (FAST) system, which allows tapping and tap-hole filling under power-on conditions to reduce tap-to-tap times.

Primetals Technologies, headquartered in London, United Kingdom, is an engineering and plant technology supplier for the metals industry and a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The company provides technologies and services covering iron and steel production, automation, digitalization, and environmental solutions.
