Algeria will begin production at iron ore processing plant at the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine, one of the world’s largest deposits, by the end of April 2026, according to Belkacem Soltani, CEO of state-owned Sonarem.
Located in Tindouf province, the mine began limited output two years ago. A new processing plant, handling crushing, screening, and dry separation, will be commissioned in April with an initial capacity of 4 mln tons per year, set to expand to 10 mln tons by 2032.
Gara Djebilet holds estimated reserves of 3.5 bln tons of ore. In parallel, construction is advancing on the country’s first iron concentrate production unit, developed by Feraal (a Sonarem subsidiary) in partnership with Tosyali.
The facility will start with a 4 mln ton annual capacity, targeting high-grade concentrate with reduced phosphorus, and will also scale up to 10 mln tons by 2032.
