Regulator holds public hearing on safeguard probe into hot-rolled steel imports

Egypt’s Trade Remedies Sector at the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade has held a public hearing for stakeholders as part of its investigation into safeguard measures on hot-rolled steel flat imports.

The session provided industry representatives, importers, and other parties an opportunity to present their views in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and Egyptian law aimed at ensuring fair competition and protecting domestic producers. The probe was launched after a significant and unexpected rise in import volumes that negatively impacted local manufacturers.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the ministry has already imposed temporary safeguard duties on hot-rolled steel at 13.6pct for 200 days starting September 14, 2025.

Additional provisional duties were also introduced, including 11.11pct on cold-rolled, 12.16pct on galvanized, 4.94pct on pre-painted steel, and 16.2pct on billet imports. Authorities stressed that these measures are not intended to block imports but to ensure they enter the market on fair terms, balancing the protection of both local industry and consumers.
