RINL seeks private participation to run critical operations at Visakhapatnam plant

India’s state-owned Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from private players to operate 32 critical units of its Visakhapatnam steel plant, as the company struggles with severe financial challenges.

RINL, which runs India’s first shore-based integrated steel plant, has long faced difficulties due to the absence of captive iron ore mines, an issue labor unions say has deepened its crisis.

The EOIs cover a wide range of power and steelmaking units, including captive power plants, waste heat recovery boilers, turbo-generators, coal handling, continuous casting machines, secondary metallurgy, and BOF shops with their auxiliaries. They also extend to finishing and shipping areas of key mills, medium merchant, structural, special bar, and wire rod, as well as roll shops, repair shops, foundries, and energy and environment management systems.

Additionally, RINL has sought interest for operating blast furnaces 1-3, their cooling and PCI systems, furnace energy operations, and blasting at the Madharam dolomite mine.

RINL, under India’s Ministry of Steel, operates a 7.5 mln ton per annum plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
