SAIL posts stronger Q1 profit despite lower steel output and sales

India’s Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) reported a sharp increase in first-quarter profit for the 2026/27 fiscal year despite lower steel production and sales volumes, supported by improved operational efficiency and cost management.

SAIL’s net profit rose to INR 1,636 crore (USD 170.4 mln) in the quarter ended June 30, compared with INR 685 crore a year earlier, while EBITDA increased to INR 4,356 crore (USD 454 mln) from INR 2,925 crore. Revenue from operations edged up to INR 26,246 crore (USD 2.73 bln) from INR 25,921 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Crude steel production declined to 4.76 mln tons from 4.85 mln tons a year earlier, while sales volumes fell to 4.16 mln tons from 4.55 mln tons. The company said production and sales were affected after it advanced scheduled repair and maintenance activities during the quarter amid geopolitical disruptions that impacted global supply chains. The planned maintenance is expected to support more stable production in the coming quarters.

SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Ashok Kumar Panda said the Indian steel market remained resilient, supported by steady domestic steel consumption. He added that improved operational efficiencies, prudent cost management and focused marketing initiatives helped the company deliver significantly stronger profitability during the quarter.

SAIL currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and is targeting an expansion to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. The company operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, producing a wide range of flat, long, special, and railway steel products.
