State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has supplied more than 31,000 tons of steel for the Zojila tunnel project, which is set to become India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel once completed.
The supply includes rebar, structural steel, and plates, making SAIL the largest steel supplier for the 30-km tunnel. Located at an altitude of 11,578 feet in the Himalayas, the tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil, forming part of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway.
SAIL said it has been providing steel on a continuous basis as construction advances toward the project’s expected completion in 2027.
