SAIL to double capacity of Rourkela Steel Plant by 2030

State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) plans to double the capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to 9.8 mln tons by 2030, as part of a major expansion and modernization drive led by the Ministry of Steel.

Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy outlined the roadmap during his visit to the plant on November 19, framing the upgrade as a key driver of Odisha’s industrial growth and India’s broader steel ambitions.

During the visit, the minister inaugurated a 1 mln tons per annum slab caster at Steel Melting Shop-2 and reviewed progress on the Coke Oven Battery 7 project and the new pellet plant, both essential to the plant’s capacity boost.

India’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), inaugurated in 1959 in Odisha, is India’s first public-sector integrated steel plant and a key unit of SAIL. Located in a mineral-rich region with strong rail links, it has a modern capacity of 4.5 mln tons per annum hot metal and 4.2 mln tons per annum crude steel, producing a range of flat products including HRC, plates, silicon steel, and pipes for the oil and gas sector.
