India’s Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has ordered Danieli’s advanced Exstream II accelerated cooling system to upgrade its plate mill in Bhilai. The move aims to enhance operational efficiency, expand the range of steel grades produced, and meet growing demand for high-quality steel domestically and internationally.
The patented Exstream II system features medium-pressure water headers, dynamically managed by Danieli Automation’s cooling model. It is designed to optimize the cooling process, resulting in superior metallurgical properties, reduced alloy usage, and improved energy efficiency.
By eliminating the need for additional off-line thermal treatments, Exstream II also contributes to a more sustainable production process, with lower resource and additive consumption. The system is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
Danieli has previously supplied several upgrade packages for the same Bhilai plate mill, including automation systems (L1 and L2), mechanical retrofits, and a new rocking side trimming shear. Another Exstream II system is currently being supplied for the Steckel mill at JSPL Raigarh, with commissioning expected in Q4 2025.
