India’s state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) recorded higher production and sales in August 2026, with crude steel output reaching a record for the month, according to the Ministry of Steel.
Crude steel production increased by 8 pct YoY to 1.68 mln tons, while hot metal production rose by 9 pct to 1.78 mln tons. Finished steel production increased by 1 pct to 1.69 mln tons, also marking the company’s best August performance.
SAIL’s total sales rose 13 pct YoY to 1.871 mln tons. Sales of value-added products, including cold rolled, galvanized and alloy steels, also reached record August levels.
Rail supplies to Indian Railways increased by 5 pct YoY to 123,000 tons, including record long-rail supplies of 112,000 tons, up 11 pct.
For April-August 2026, SAIL’s cumulative sales increased 5.6 pct YoY to 7.71 mln tons.
SAIL currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and is targeting an expansion to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. The company operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, producing a wide range of flat, long, special, and railway steel products.
