Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has signed a long-term agreement with Oldendorff Carriers to lower carbon emissions in iron ore transport, advancing Salzgitter’s drive toward a climate-neutral steel supply chain.
From January 2026, Oldendorff will ship iron ore to Hamburg using fuel-efficient bulk carriers and optimized routing, cutting CO2 emissions by at least 20pct. The collaboration is expected to save around 19,000 tons of CO2 annually, equal to removing more than 4,000 cars from the road, while also reducing fuel costs. The reductions count as Scope 1 emissions for Oldendorff and Scope 3 for Salzgitter.
The deal reflects both companies’ decarbonization strategies: Oldendorff operates a fleet of modern eco-type bulk carriers designed for lower fuel consumption, while Salzgitter is investing in closed material loops, energy efficiency, and new technologies to transition toward low-carbon steel.
