Salzgitter AG said its subsidiaries have been awarded contracts to supply key pipeline segments for the FGL 702 hydrogen project, part of Germany’s emerging hydrogen core network. The project will facilitate renewable hydrogen supply to industrial users and support Salzgitter’s green steel ambitions under its SALCOS low-CO2 steelmaking program.
Under the contracts, Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH will deliver line pipes for around 70.6 km of the route, while Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH will supply an additional 38.2 km section linking Wefensleben with the Salzgitter region and extending toward Preusslitz. The pipelines are designed for safe and efficient hydrogen transport, connecting renewable energy sources, storage facilities and industrial consumers.
The hydrogen core network is a strategic infrastructure initiative supporting Germany’s energy transition and industrial decarbonization, including the phased conversion of Salzgitter’s integrated steelworks to lower-carbon technologies. Access to the backbone network is considered crucial for advancing the company’s green steel plans.
The line pipes will feature multi-layer protective coatings to ensure durability and long-term operational reliability, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.
Salzgitter is one of Germany’s leading steelmakers, with crude steel capacity of approximately 7 mln tons per year, producing flat and long steel products as well as tubes.
