Scrap import prices ease on weak steel demand

Turkey’s scrap import prices fell this week, pressured by weak steel demand. Prices were assessed at USD 330-335 per ton CFR, down from USD 335-345 per ton CFR last week.

Buying activity remains subdued, with mills pushing for lower prices while suppliers hold firm, citing higher freight costs and unfavorable exchange rates.

The recent revision to the Inward Processing Regime has also made mills cautious. The scheme allows producers to import raw materials, semi-finished products, or other inputs without paying customs duties, provided the finished products are further processed in Turkey and then exported. Mills are waiting to evaluate the impact of the changes before resuming large-scale scrap purchases, though some analysts believe the revised rules could ultimately support scrap imports.

On the export side, Turkish steel offers were steady, with rebar at USD 540-550 per ton FOB and wire rod at USD 555-565 per ton FOB, though mills remain open to negotiation to secure orders.
