Severstal has commissioned a modern gas cleaning system for Electric Arc Furnace No. 5 (EAF-5) at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK), its main asset. The project is part of a wider upgrade of the blank production shop’s foundry complex, aimed at boosting output of shaped steel castings. Around 25pct of the investment has been allocated to gas purification.
The system, built at Severstal’s SSM-Tyazhmash machine-building center, is designed to clean emissions from EAF-5, which has a capacity of up to 6 tons of liquid metal, and will also serve the upcoming DSP-7 furnace with a capacity of 10 tons. The bag filter-based system, with an aspiration capacity of 300,000 m3/hour, ensures exhaust cleaning efficiency of under 20 mg/m3, meeting workplace hygiene and environmental standards.
Work is ongoing to complete installation of DSP-7 and its flue gas ducts, as well as a new vacuum film forming molding line. The full integrated gas cleaning system at the shaped casting section is expected to be launched in the near future.
