Shougang to modernize cold rolling mill automation at Beijing plant

Shougang Cold Rolling Co., Ltd. has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to modernize the Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems at its pickling line tandem cold mill (PLTCM) in Shunyi, Beijing, China.

The project will upgrade the plant’s automation infrastructure and include the revamp of one of the mill’s main drives. Completion is scheduled for August 2026.

According to Primetals Technologies, the modernization will extend the service life of the control systems, simplify maintenance, and reduce operating costs. The upgraded Level 2 automation platform will incorporate advanced process models and enhanced data management capabilities, improving process stability, control accuracy, and product quality.

The improvements are expected to support the production of high-end cold-rolled steel products for the automotive and home appliance sectors.

Primetals said the project will utilize its Chart Converter software to facilitate a faster and lower-risk migration from the existing automation system to the new platform, helping to minimize production downtime during implementation.

Shougang Cold Rolling, based in Shunyi, Beijing, is a subsidiary of Shougang Group, one of China’s leading steel producers. The company specializes in the production of high-end cold-rolled steel products for the automotive and home appliance sectors.
