SSAB awards early works contract for Lulea logistics facility

SSAB has signed an early works agreement  with NYAB covering the initial phase of a new steel coil logistics facility to support its planned mini mill in Lulea, Sweden.

The agreement includes design, engineering, project management and preparatory works for the logistics facility and related infrastructure, which will form part of the supply chain supporting SSAB’s ongoing transformation of steel production at the Lulea site.

The companies are also continuing negotiations on potential contracts covering subsequent phases of the project’s development and execution. Any additional work will be subject to separate agreements.

The logistics facility is a key component of the infrastructure required for SSAB’s new mini mill, which will replace the existing blast furnace-based production with electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking as part of the company’s transition toward fossil-free steel production.

SSAB is a Nordic and North American steel producer specializing in high-strength steels, quenched and tempered steels, strip, plate and tubular products. The company is transforming its Nordic operations by replacing blast furnace production with electric arc furnaces, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining an annual steel production capacity of approximately 8.8 mln tons.
