SSAB launches additive manufacturing solutions for defense applications

SSAB is showcasing its Armox 500 AM Powder at the Eurosatory 2026 defense and security exhibition, highlighting the potential of additive manufacturing to produce lightweight, high-strength armor components for defense applications.

The company said Armox 500 AM Powder is the world’s first armor steel powder designed to deliver protection performance comparable to conventional Armox armor plate while enabling more complex component designs through 3D printing.

According to SSAB, the powder can be used to manufacture components such as camera housings, sensor protection systems, antenna mounts and other external vehicle parts that require both durability and ballistic resistance. Additive manufacturing also enables lattice and honeycomb structures that can enhance protection while reducing weight.

The product forms part of SSAB’s broader strategy to expand its presence in both the defense and additive manufacturing sectors, where demand for high-performance steel powders continues to grow.

To support commercial production, SSAB is expanding its powder manufacturing facility in Oxelosund, Sweden. The company plans to begin ramping up production from the first quarter of 2028, with annual capacity expected to reach approximately 350 tons.

SSAB is a leading producer of high-strength and specialty steels. Its Armox range of armor steel products has been widely used in military and security applications for more than four decades.
