SSAB to advance fossil-free steelmaking through R&D initiative

SSAB has been selected as one of Business Finland’s leading companies under its 2025 challenge programme and will launch a five-year research and development initiative titled Sustainable World through Steels.

The programme aims to build an ecosystem of more than 200 partners, including research institutes, universities, technology providers and customers. The total estimated cost of the project is around USD 59 mln, with additional collaboration expected through EU-supported initiatives.

SSAB said the project will focus on advancing fossil-free electric steelmaking, developing low-emission steel applications and improving supply chain efficiency through digitalization, while promoting circular use of steel industry by-products.

The initiative is also intended to support the transition of Nordic steel production towards more sustainable manufacturing and to develop advanced high-strength, low-emission steel grades.

Business Finland’s programme supports globally competitive companies in expanding R&D activity and building industrial ecosystems aimed at generating new business and strengthening export growth.

SSAB is a leading producer of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel products, with an annual crude steel capacity of about 8.8 mln tons across its operations in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
