SSAB starts work on new quenching line for wear-resistant steels

SSAB has started construction of a new quenching line at its Oxelosund steel mill in Sweden, following a SEK 3.3 bln (USD 328 mln) investment announced in May 2026. Production is scheduled to begin in 2030.

The new line will add around 100,000 tons per year of capacity for advanced high-strength wear-resistant and protection steels, strengthening SSAB Special Steels’ premium product portfolio. The investment forms part of the company’s strategy to expand its advanced steel offering while completing the conversion of the Oxelosund steel mill.

Quenching is a heat-treatment process involving rapid cooling to achieve high steel hardness and strength. The new line will support production of advanced grades, including Hardox wear-resistant steel and Armox protection steel, for demanding industrial, safety and defence-related applications.

SSAB President and CEO Johnny Sjostrom said the investment would strengthen the company’s position in premium steels and expand capacity for differentiated products. He added that the use of modern electrified technology would support the development of its production system and product offering.

SSAB is a Nordic and North American steel producer specializing in high-strength steels, quenched and tempered steels, strip, plate and tubular products. The company is transforming its Nordic operations by replacing blast furnace production with electric arc furnaces, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining an annual steel production capacity of approximately 8.8 mln tons.
