SSAB supplies steel for Kruunuvuori Bridge project in Helsinki

SSAB has supplied structural steel and foundation components for the Kruunuvuori Bridge project in Helsinki, one of the largest bridge developments in Finland.

More than 3,000 tons of SSAB Domex high-strength structural steel were used in the bridge, while the company also delivered driven and drilled piles for the foundations, including large-diameter units of up to 1,220 mm.

The steel structures, manufactured and installed by Nordec, total around 6,300 tons. SSAB’s Domex 460ML grade plates were selected to ensure strength, durability and lightweight design, supporting a targeted service life of at least 200 years under demanding weather conditions.

The project incorporates sustainability considerations, with SSAB’s steel contributing to material efficiency and reduced emissions. The company said its steel has lower CO2 emissions compared with industry averages, supporting the bridge’s environmental objectives.

The Kruunuvuori Bridge, approximately 1,200 metres long with a 135-metre central pylon, will connect Helsinki city centre with Laajasalo and is designed primarily for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

SSAB is a leading producer of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel products, with an annual crude steel capacity of about 8.8 mln tons across its operations in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
