SSAB has appointed international engineering group Fives to upgrade the control systems of its reheating furnaces at the Raahe plant in Finland. The two Stein Digit@l Furnace units, originally supplied by Fives in the 1990s and refurbished several times since, now require modernization due to evolving production needs and the end of software support for the existing system.
To ensure long-term operational efficiency, SSAB will implement Fives’ latest Level 2 control system, including the Virtuo-R thermal optimiser, which will automate furnace regulation, reduce manual intervention, and deliver more consistent performance.
SSAB will also adopt Smart Monitoring, a data-driven platform that integrates Virtuo-R data into intuitive dashboards, providing real-time performance metrics, early anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance capabilities.
