Steel Dynamics launches low-carbon steel product lines

Steel Dynamics, Inc. has introduced two new lower-embodied-carbon steel product ranges, BIOEDGE and EDGE, designed to help customers meet greenhouse gas reduction and sustainability goals.

Both products are produced using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology and paired with Green-e Energy certified renewable or nuclear energy certificates, cutting Scope 2 emissions. BIOEDGE goes further by using renewable biocarbon in place of anthracite, reducing Scope 1 emissions while maintaining performance and quality.

The EDGE steel range will be available across all Steel Dynamics operations, serving the automotive, construction, renewable energy, and infrastructure sectors. The biocarbon for BIOEDGE is supplied by SDI Biocarbon Solutions, a joint venture between Steel Dynamics (75pct) and Aymium (25pct), a global producer of high-value biocarbon and biohydrogen that can substitute fossil fuels without equipment modifications.

Steel Dynamics emphasized that the new offerings align with its circular manufacturing model, which relies on recycled scrap as a primary input to produce low-carbon, high-quality metals. The company is also expanding into aluminum flat rolled products with high recycled content for the beverage can, automotive, and industrial markets.

Steel Dynamics is one of North America’s largest steel producers and metal recyclers, with operations across the U.S. and Mexico.
