Steel exports climb in August 2024

China’s steel exports rose by 14.7pct YoY to 9.5 mln tons in August 2024, according to the General Administration of Customs. This represents a 21pct increase from the previous month.

In the first eight months of 2024, steel exports surged by 20.6pct to 70.58 mln tons, marking the highest total for this period since 2016.

Steel imports, however, fell by over 20pct YoY in August to 509,000 tons, though this is a slight increase of 0.8pct from July. From January to August 2024, steel imports decreased by 8.4pct YoY to 4.63 mln tons.

China’s iron ore imports in August dropped 1.38pct from July and fell 4.73pct YoY to 101.39 mln tons. However, from January to August 2024, iron ore imports grew by 5.2pct YoY to 814.95 mln tons.
