Steel imports continue to exceed exports in Apr-Jul 2024

India remained a net importer of steel in the first four months of the current fiscal year, which began in April, with China being its largest supplier, according to provisional government data reported by Reuters.

Between April and July, India imported 2.69 mln tons of steel while exporting 1.57 mln tons. The trend of net steel imports, which began in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, has persisted, with increasing imports from China.

China emerged as the top steel exporter to India during this period, delivering approximately 807,000 tons. Japan and South Korea followed in terms of export volumes.

Concerns about rising steel imports have been highlighted by major Indian steelmakers such as JSW Steel and Tata Steel. In response, the Indian government has launched an anti-dumping investigation into certain steel products imported from Vietnam.

For steel exports, Italy was the largest buyer from India during the same period, followed by Belgium and the United Kingdom.
