The U.S. imported 2.24 mln tons of steel in July 2025, including 1.69 mln tons of finished steel, according to preliminary Census Bureau data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Compared with June, total imports slipped 0.6pct, while finished steel imports edged up 1.3pct.
Year-to-date, total and finished steel imports are down 5pct and 8.9pct, respectively, versus the same period in 2024.
Finished steel import market share was estimated at 19pct in July and 20pct over the first seven months of 2025.
Products showing strong monthly growth included metallic-coated sheet and strip (+92pct), heavy structural shapes (+32pct), tin plate (+25pct), mechanical tubing (+19pct), and oil country goods (+17pct).
South Korea was the largest supplier in July, shipping 331,000 tons (up 83pct vs. June), followed by Brazil (301,000 tons, -29pct), Canada (301,000 tons, -13pct), Mexico (254,000 tons, +42pct), and Taiwan (131,000 tons, +10pct).
