Tata Steel develops fire-resistant structural steel

Tata Steel has developed a hot-rolled, fire-resistant E350 structural steel designed to help buildings and engineering structures retain their structural integrity during fires. The product has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under IS 15103, the Indian standard for fire-resistant structural steel.

The steel can retain two-thirds of its room-temperature yield strength at 600 Celsius for up to three hours, according to the company. Its performance is based on an optimized combination of microalloying elements and microstructural engineering to improve strength retention at elevated temperatures.

Tata Steel said the product can be used in fire-resistant structural components, including structural hollow tubes and sections for pre-engineered buildings.

Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group, is one of the world’s leading steel producers with operations in India, the Netherlands, the UK and Thailand. The company has an annual consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.9 mln tons and plans to increase it to 51.5 mln tons per year by FY2030-31.
