Tata Steel Nederland has opened a new production line for sustainable packaging steel at its IJmuiden site, setting a fresh European benchmark in environmentally friendly food-grade steel manufacturing.
The new line uses the company’s proprietary Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT) to produce packaging steel that complies with future European chemical-use legislation and rigorous food safety standards. TCCT, developed and patented by Tata Steel Nederland, eliminates the need for additional lacquer coatings at customer facilities, helping reduce chemical usage, cut production costs and simplify supply chains.
By concentrating the entire production process on a single site, the investment also enhances logistical efficiency and operational flexibility. The line reinforces Tata Steel Nederland’s commitment to sustainability and positions the company as a European standard-setter for future-ready packaging steel that meets evolving regulatory and market requirements.
Steel packaging is already one of the most recycled materials in Europe, with more than 95pct of packaging steel reused in new steel products, and the new TCCT-enabled products are expected to further support circular economy goals while enhancing food shelf life and safety.
Tata Steel Nederland is a subsidiary of the India-based Tata Steel Group, focusing on high-quality strip steel for demanding sectors such as automotive, construction, and packaging, with an annual crude steel production capacity of 7.5 mln tons per annum.
