Tata Steel Ludhiana has received the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licence under IS 14650:2023 for producing octagonal billets, becoming the first steel producer in India to receive the certification.
The certified billets are used to manufacture Tata Tiscon TMT rebars for residential and commercial construction, infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, metros and airports, as well as industrial and power-sector applications.
Octagonal billets offer several advantages over conventional square and rectangular billets, including a larger surface area for improved heat transfer and more uniform cooling. Tata Steel said the design also improves material flow during rolling, resulting in better grain structure, strength, toughness, ductility and dimensional accuracy in finished rebars.
The billet shape can also improve metal yield by reducing corner losses and lower wear on rolling mill equipment through more uniform rolling forces. Tata Steel said the resulting improvements in material utilization and energy efficiency support its efforts toward a greener steelmaking ecosystem.
The BIS certification, granted on August 21, validates Tata Steel Ludhiana’s manufacturing processes and quality systems for the product, according to the company.
Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group, is one of the world’s leading steel producers with operations in India, the Netherlands, the UK and Thailand. The company has an annual consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.9 mln tons and plans to increase it to 51.5 mln tons per year by FY2030-31.
