Tata Steel nears completion of Kalinganagar plant expansion

Tata Steel is set to commission the phase-II expansion of its Kalinganagar plant, which will increase its steelmaking capacity from 3 mln tons per annum to 8 mln tons per annum. This expansion solidifies Odisha as the company’s largest investment destination.

The increased capacity at Kalinganagar is key to Tata Steel’s goal of achieving 40 mln tons per annum in India by 2030. The first phase of the plant was completed in 2015, and Tata Steel further expanded its presence in Odisha with the acquisition of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) in 2022.

Looking ahead, Tata Steel plans to double Kalinganagar’s capacity to 16 mln tons per annum, further cementing Odisha’s strategic importance in the company’s growth. This expansion is supported by the development of iron ore mines, infrastructure projects like the Subarnarekha port in Balasore district, and the implementation of slurry pipelines for transporting iron ore fines.
