Tata Steel partners Hindustan Zinc to advance low-carbon steelmaking

Tata Steel has partnered with Hindustan Zinc to integrate low-carbon zinc solutions into its steel production, as part of efforts to reduce emissions across the value chain.

The collaboration will see the use of Hindustan Zinc’s EcoZen, a low-carbon zinc produced using renewable energy, in Tata Steel’s galvanized steel products. The initiative aims to lower the overall carbon footprint of steel, particularly in downstream applications such as infrastructure, automotive and energy.

EcoZen has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional zinc, with potential to reduce emissions in galvanized steel by lowering embedded carbon during the coating process.

The partnership reflects a broader push within the steel industry to decarbonize not only primary steelmaking but also upstream and downstream inputs, including coatings and raw materials.

Hindustan Zinc Limited, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer.

Tata Steel Group is among the leading global steel producers, with an annual crude steel capacity of around 35 mln tons.
